How to Make Breadcrumbs from Scratch

Breadcrumbs from Scratch?

It is so easy to make breadcrumbs from scratch. Save yourself some money. Do it yourself. Ready in less than half an hour. (It takes more time to go to the store these days!) When a recipe like a moist and flavourful meatloaf calls for a cup of breadcrumbs, you can make your own. I had about half a cup of breadcrumbs from the last time I made my own. You can have fun customizing it: add a TBSP of your favourite dried herbs and mix it. I would recommend storing it plain as you can add your spices and herbs when you need it later.

We have been baking our own bread to reduce the amount of grocery trips in a week. When I make breadcrumbs from scratch, I use about 4 to 5 slices of bread at a time; this yields roughly a half cup to 3/4 cup of breadcrumbs. That’s how much cut up oven dried bread cubes would fit in a Vitamix dry container. So, if you need more breadcrumbs using a Vitamix, empty the breadcrumbs from the dry container and add in new ones. I set the dial to 1 to start and gradually increase to 4. If there are stray cubes of bread that are stubborn, you would need to empty the container to about half and continue processing the remaining cubes into breadcrumbs.

Cost to make your own breadcrumbs? I would say it costs less than $3 to make your own. Mostly time and either store bought bread or home made bread. Our home made bread is adapted from Robin Hood’s recipe, which needs butter or margarine, salt, sugar, milk, yeast, flour and water. I recommend using 1 tbsp of yeast instead of 2 1/4 tsp though.

Store in an airtight container. It will keep for up to a year, but it won’t last that long when you keep using it.

  4. Transfer to a food processor and pulse until fine.
  5. Store in an airtight container.

  1. This recipe is super useful. The breadcrumbs have the best crunch! I don’t have to constantly purchase bread crumbs in the store. I’ll be referencing them in the future!

  2. Oh this is great! I’ve had so many occasions where I’ve needed breadcrumbs only to realize I’m out. Pinning this to make!

  3. Very handy recipe to have at one’s disposal! As Kelly said above, I feel like I never have breadcrumbs when I need them. And given that I (and everyone else on the planet) am making my own bread these days, DIY breadcrumbs need to be on the to-do list too! Cheers.

  4. Such a useful how-to! I agree it’s always better to make it yourself whenever possible. I love that you even make your own bread! My mom always had a HUGE sack of Robin Hood under our stairs for bread baking 🙂

  5. Brilliant! This is a great way to use up stale bread too, which is a problem in our house. So simple, thanks!
